Writing Breaks

In Uncategorized on August 29, 2017 at 3:59 am

All major characters have been named and there are name studies for the supporting cast as well. Two of the main characters have introduced themselves to me, background details and all. More important, they have shown their scars, the one thing that will either redeem or damn them. Character is destiny and that’s all you need to know about plot.

I get two writing breaks this week.

One break is the root canal which I have just done, which is why I am awake at this ungodly hour of 3.47 ayem not writing (blogging is the very opposite of writing, and yes, bloggers are not writers.) Two painkillers which made me woozy as fuck  —  the kind that you are so dizzy you can’t sleep  — is starting to wear off. The dizziness is gone. And now the pain that only root canal can inflict is starting to creep in. I have taken a couple of Tylenol instead of the prescribed control substance as I cannot afford to be a zombie during daytime when errands and house chores and writing need to be ticked off a list.

The second break is a Bermuda break where we get to enjoy pink sands and good company for four days and three nights. Books and booze will be had with total disregard to the shackles that is 9 to 5. We are going to do snorkeling, boating (the kind with sails and you guess it, an open bar), and parasailing. I might also do some writing.

I wrote a full-length stage play early this year and I might have some news.

Now I either read or attempt to go back to sleep.

Name Studies

In Uncategorized on August 23, 2017 at 7:49 am

Got two pages worth of name studies and that’s just for their surnames.

Today, finding their first names begins.

Also on the plate, developing them. It has come to that point when they are revealing themselves and all I have to do is take notes. This novel has five major characters, and just like the previous ones, the lines are blurred as who is the protagonist and the antagonist. Once the names have been found, it will just be a matter of noting down how they  make their decisions.

The arcs and the threads are also being noted down, and as I do this, opening scenes are presenting themselves. I ignore these as: one, I loathe false starts and would rather delay the actual writing than erase something because it doesn’t work, and two, it is best to bottle up this desire to write words and sentences and paragraphs and chapters only when the time comes so that momentum is sustained. Marathon than  a sprint and all that.

Once a get a solid view of how Act 2 unfolds, then writing the first word will begin. Act 3 and the novel’s ending will depend entirely on the characters. See novel writing is magic.

I’m Back

From here on, this will be a log of the progress of novel number 3.

(For the record, novel number 1 is in the sock drawer as the world is not yet ready for it, and novel number 2 is that Palanca winner.)

Today, the title came.

The actual title and not a stand-in or a project name.

Tomorrow, more notes on the bond paper and on the moleskin and on the iA Writer app on the iPhone.

This novel will be done by around February 2018.

It’s nice to be back.
